As the Denizens of the Woodland, your goal is to give aid to the factions with whom you are allies, and to do harm to the factions with whom you are hostile. On your turn, non-hostile factions receive benefits from your buildings, and indifferent factions take debt, which scores you points at the end of your turn.
Factions can also take debt to advance on your relationships track, and the only way to get rid of it is for them to give you cards. You can advance factions on your relationships track by spending matching cards.
Though you have no warriors yourself, during your daylight you can persuade allied factions to move and battle with their warriors, and in battle as defender, you treat allied warriors as your own.
The three benefits that non-hostile factions can receive are drawing cards (farms), placing warriors (inns) and taking weapon tokens (smithies). Weapon tokens increase maximum hits in battle up to three, and then if any are left in the clearing of battle, the player with the weapons deals an extra hit.
